2010 season preview Clay County enters its 4th season under head coach, Kevin Spurlock. For the first time in a few years the roster will include a number of upperclassmen in the junior and senior classes as the program has been in a reconstruction phase. This group will be led by 4 year starter, DJ Wilson, who will join a select group of players to have ever started 4 years at Clay County. The team this year is expected to challenge for the 13th Region Championship which has eluded them since 2001. They will have to battle the likes of Corbin (defending champion), South Laurel (led by 6'9 D-1 prospect, Matt St. John), and Knox Central (led by All-Regional player, Cody Miller) along with other up and coming programs throughout the region. They will once again play one of the toughest schedules in the state which includes participating in events like the KBA Classic at the Frankfort Civic Center, the Bobby Keith Classic, the Defenders of the Station Invitational, the Big Red Shoot-Out, and the WYMT Mountain Classic. Outside region opponents will include the likes of Franklin County, Henry Clay, Bryan Station, Wayne County, Madison Central, Lexington Catholic, Louisville Trinity, Desales, and Tates Creek. We will also battle with in-region rivals such as Corbin, Knox Central, North Laurel, Bell County, Harlan County, Pineville, South Laurel, and Middlesboro. The Tigers will be ranked #1 in the preseason ratings for the 13th region and although it will bring some added pressure for the season it is a thing that they have worked hard during the last 3 years to achieve and the hope is that they will not only be able to maintain that ranking at the end of the season but to be able to continue it for years to come. On a side note, the Tigers lost the services of starting point guard, JV Hooker, to a torn ACL which will require him to miss the entire season. This is a huge loss for the team but if they can get some players to step up their game then this regional championship goal is still attainable. We wish JV a speedy and successful recovery. Eye of the Tiger Welcome to the Jungle 2009 Team Pic 2009 Season Review Clay County entered the season with a pre-season rating of #3 in the region and they never disappointed in such a high rating as the season progressed. Clay would have one of the toughest schedules in the state based on the youth and inexperience of their team which consisted of only 1 senior and 3 juniors. Of the top 8 players, 5 would be sophomores with a total of 10 of the 14 varsity players made up of 9th and 10th graders. The Tigers would finish the season 19-13 while capturing the 49th District Championship. The young Tigers would capture a win in the Bobby Keith Classic, the Farm Bureau Classic, and capture the Big Red Shoot-Out. Big wins ourside the region this year would come vs. Lexington Christian, Louisville Central, Wayne County, Madison Central, and FCI (OH) with regional wins vs. Knox Central, North Laurel, Bell County, Harlan Co, Pineville, and Middlesboro (2). Clay would have some close and tough losses to powers such as Corbin, Bryan Station (2), Hazard, Perry Central, South Laurel (2), Louisville Trinity, Clark County, and Lexington Tates Creek. Ending the season with a 2 point loss to 4-time defending South Laurel was a major disappointment but it gives notice that the Tigers are back to compete at the regional levels and their showing throughout the state this year lets them know that they should be ready to compete at the state level. With a great out-of-season work ethic Clay may be ready to make a serious run at the Sweet 16 next season. In conclusion, let us say good-bye and thank you to Jeremy "Wormy" Garrison, our lone senior. He was the only survivor of his class to make it through 4 years which shows great character and commitment. We will miss him and wish him nothing but the best in life. As a wrap-up to the season let it be known that the JV team had a good year as they finished 14-6 under head coach Jerry Combs and our 9th grade team only finished 4-8 but this was after an 0-7 start as they advanced to the regional semi-finals under head coach Robert Marcum. We are also high on our 8th grade team as they advanced to the quarter-finals of the KBA state tournament. | A Tradition Like No Other and a Way of Life Clay County Basketball http://scoreboard.12dt.com/scoreboard/khsaa/kybbk09/?id=31028 To see results of each game click on link above 2009-10 Schedule (Tentative): updates through Fall 2009 November: 21 Spider Thurman Classic 5:00-8:00 Louisville Moore (at CCMS V/JV) 27 KBA Showcase (at Rupp Arena) 9:15 vs. McCreary County (V) December: 1 at Prestonsburg (V/JV) 5 KBA Classic at Frankfort Civic Center 6:45 vs. Franklin County (V) 8 Corbin (V/JV) 11 Bobby Keith Classic (see top of webpage) (V) 15 Knox Central (V/JV) 18-22 Defenders of the Station Invitational 18-vs Jeffersontown 8:00 at Henry Clay HS 19-vs. Fern Creek 4:30 at Bryan Station HS 21-vs. Henry Clay 6:00 at Bryan Station HS 22-TBD based on pool play (other pool-Bryan Station, Male, Dunbar, Danville) 28-30 Big Red Shoot-Out (V- 3 GAMES, JV-2 GAMES) -see schedule at top of the webpage January: 5-9 WYMT Mountain Classic at Knott County Central (2-3 games varsity) 12 at Wayne Co (V/JV) 14 North Laurel (V/JV/9th) 16 at Madison Central (V/JV) 19 at Bell County (V/JV) 22 Lexington Catholic (V/JV/9th) 28 Harlan County (V/JV) 30 Whitley County (V/JV) February: 2 at Pineville (V/JV) 5 at South Laure (V/JV) 6 Louisville Trinity (V/JV) 13 Desales (V/JV) 16 at Tates Creek (V/JV) 18 Middlesboro (V/JV) 9TH GRADE SCHEDULE Nov: Preseason Games Spider Thurman/SEKC Classic Spider Thurman Gym (old high school/current middle school) November 21, 2009 5:00-8:00 CCHS Tigers vs. Louisville Moore Kentucky Basketball Academy Showcase at Rupp Arena November 27th vs. McCreary County 9:15 Tickets on sale at the HS starting Nov. 10th Only have 100 to sell Summer Events 2009 Coastal Carolina Team Camp Camp Champions-Varsity Division Myrtle Beach, SC AAU High School State Tournament Varsity and JV Elite 8 2008 Season Review Even though this year's Tiger squad did not achieve their ultimate goal of making it to Rupp Arena for the Sweet 16 they have nothing to hang their head about. They finished the season with a 20-11 record which included the school's 55th 49th Districit Championship. They also went undefeated in district play (8-0) after being picked the 3rd best team in the district in the pre-season polls. They captured the Big Red Shoot-Out, our own invitational, for the second consecutive year. They went from being chosen the 8th-10th best team in the region in the pre-season polls to being one of the favorites (top 5) by season's end. They represented themselves, their school, and their community in nothing but positive ways as they took on one of the toughest schedules east of Lexington which included participating in the Bobby Keith Classic, the 5/3 Classic at Lexington Catholic, the WYMT Mountain Classic, and the Toyota Classic at Scott County. This doesn't even include a regional schedule in what could be considered the most balanced region in the state. These kids played with great heart and intensity and held their own while 15 of the 18 kids on the roster where in the 9th and 10th grades. They were led by two outstanding seniors in Justin Hobbs and Ryan Lee Smith who exemplified what playing for Clay County should mean to the players who wear the Black and Gold. It was a fun and exciting year and one that all can be proud of. Good luck to the seniors in their future endeavors and to the returning players as they continue their quest to get Clay County back to Rupp. 2007 Recap
